Zimba District has received a significant boost in the health sector after securing US$2 million in funding for the construction of a modern double-storey eye care facility at Zimba Eye Clinic.
The project has been made possible through a partnership between International Vision Volunteers and Eye Surgeons International, with financial support from the Fiat Lux Foundation.
The project, which will be implemented by the Fiat Lux Foundation, is expected to be completed within 24 months and will greatly improve access to specialized eye care services for people in Zimba District and surrounding areas.
Speaking during the Ground Breaking Ceremony held at Zimba Mission Hospital today, Zimba District Commissioner Robinson Mulamfu said the construction of the state-of-the-art eye care facility aligns with the Government’s vision of ensuring that quality healthcare services are accessible to all citizens.
Mr. Mulamfu noted that access to eye care remains a critical need in many communities and emphasized that the new facility will play an important role in improving the wellbeing of residents in the district.
Meanwhile, Zimba Town Council Director of Health Dr. Milimo Kayawa said the new facility is expected to serve an estimated 120,790 people through the 16 health facilities spread across the district.
Dr. Kayawa expressed confidence that the project will strengthen health service delivery and bring specialized medical services closer to the people of Zimba.
And Southern Province Health Director Dr. Calistus Kayunga, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Provincial Clinical Care Specialist Clive Band, said the installation of specialized treatment equipment at the facility will make it unique within the province and position it as an important centre for eye care services in Southern Africa.
Dr. Kayunga added that the project will help strengthen the health system and contribute to the country’s efforts to achieve equitable access to quality health services as Zambia moves towards universal health coverage.
Speaking at the same event, President of Eye Surgeons International Dr. John Bosett said the facility will be equipped with modern technology that meets international standards and will also serve as a training centre for doctors and other eye care specialists.
Dr. Bosetti stressed that the advanced equipment to be installed at the facility will enable the provision of high-quality eye care services to the community.
